Don’t know your exact time? Pick approximate or unknown, you can refine it later with our rectification tool.

An exact birth time is recommended but not required. The Ascendant antiscion is only meaningful if the birth time is accurate.

What are antiscia?

Antiscia (singular antiscion, sometimes called solstice points) are ecliptic reflections of planets across the cardinal solstice axis at 0° Cancer and 0° Capricorn. The Greek root means “opposite shadow”, and the technique earns the name: an antiscion sits silently in your chart at a point you would not otherwise mark, but it behaves like a hidden conjunction. When another body crosses it, the original planet activates from a place the chart did not visibly show.

Contra-antiscia (counter-antiscia) reflect across the equinoctial axis at 0° Aries and 0° Libra. They sit exactly 180° from the antiscion. Both are produced by the same cardinal-axis geometry, and both have been part of Western astrological practice since Ptolemy in the 2nd century CE and Firmicus Maternus in the 4th.

How the solstice axis creates antiscia

The cardinal axis is the geometric backbone of the tropical zodiac. The Sun crosses 0° Cancer at the summer solstice and 0° Capricorn at the winter solstice; those are the two points where day length flips direction. Signs equidistant from the solstice points share the same day length, so they share the same solar power. Cancer and Gemini, for example, are both adjacent to the summer solstice: Cancer holds the solstice forward, Gemini holds it back. Their antiscia trade energy across that shared length.

That is why antiscia were never esoteric in classical practice. They describe a real astronomical symmetry, not a symbolic one. Two planets in antiscia are linked by the same fact that links the two signs, which is why the contact behaves like a conjunction even though the planets are not visibly close.

Antiscia vs contra-antiscia: “seeing” vs “hearing” signs

William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), framed antiscia as “seeing signs”: the contact behaves like a beneficial aspect, comparable in tone to a sextile or trine. The energy moves laterally and the two planets work together. Contra-antiscia he called “hearing signs”: the contact is hierarchical, with one planet commanding and the other obeying. The relationship still produces real activity, but the dynamic is asymmetric.

In practice, treat both as hidden conjunctions when scanning a chart, then read antiscia as the more harmonious of the two and contra-antiscia as the more compulsive. The activation is real either way; the texture differs.

How to calculate antiscia by hand

The arithmetic is simple. Subtract the planet's degree from 30° and its minute from 60′, then place the result in the paired sign. The borrow is the part most articles get wrong: when minutes do not subtract cleanly, treat 30°00′ as 29°60′.

  1. Read the natal degree. Example: Sun at 11°18′ Scorpio.
  2. Subtract from 30°00′. 30°00′ minus 11°18′ becomes 29°60′ minus 11°18′, which equals 18°42′.
  3. Place in the paired sign. Scorpio pairs with Aquarius, so the antiscion is 18°42′ Aquarius. The contra-antiscion sits 180° away at 18°42′ Leo.

The calculator above does this in one pass for every body in the chart and uses the same arc-second precision used in the natal engine, so you do not have to round mid-calculation.

How to use antiscia in a reading

Natal. Scan your antiscia table for any reflection that sits within 1° of another natal placement. Those are the hidden conjunctions in your chart. They often explain the “why does this planet keep getting tangled with that planet?” question that a normal aspect read does not answer.

Synastry. Compare each person's antiscia to the other person's natal placements. Hits within a 1° orb signal hidden ties. Contra-antiscia hits often show a more hierarchical or fated dynamic. The 1° cap is firm here; wider orbs dilute the signal.

Transits. When a transiting planet crosses one of your natal antiscia or contra-antiscia points within 2° applying or 1° separating, traditional astrologers consider the activation potent, comparable in weight to a transiting conjunction over the natal placement itself.

Antiscia vs parallels of declination

Antiscia and parallels of declination are commonly confused because both are symmetry techniques, but they operate in different coordinate systems.

  • Antiscia reflect across ecliptic longitude, the plane that holds the zodiac. They are computed from the planet's position around the wheel.
  • Parallels of declination reflect across celestial declination, the angular distance north or south of the celestial equator. They depend on the planet's out-of-plane position, not its zodiacal degree.

Both surface hidden contacts. Both can produce activation. But they are not interchangeable, and they are calculated from different inputs. For declination work, see our declination graph and parallel aspects calculator.

A brief history of antiscia

Antiscia appear in Claudius Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos(2nd century CE) and in Julius Firmicus Maternus's Mathesis (4th century CE). The technique was developed further through the medieval Arabic-Latin tradition (Bonatti, Ibn Ezra) and reached full systematization in William Lilly's Christian Astrology (1647), where the “seeing” and “hearing” signs framework first appears in widely translated form.

Modern reception has been carried by traditional astrology scholars including Deborah Houlding (Skyscript) and the editorial tradition of The Mountain Astrologer. The technique has been part of the Western astrological toolkit for nearly two thousand years and remains a standard tool in horary, electional, and natal practice.

How our calculator differs

Most online antiscia calculators show the antiscion alone, in a utilitarian table, with no contra-antiscion column and no interpretive context. We show both reflections for every body in one pass and surface the headline reflection (Sun antiscion by default) at the top, the way you would actually use it in a reading.

Ephemeris precision matters for antiscia because the technique uses a strict 1° orb. Rounding errors in the natal calculation propagate directly into false hits or missed contacts. We compute natal placements with NASA's ANISE toolkit and JPL DE-440 ephemerides for arc-second positional accuracy, then derive the antiscia from those longitudes without intermediate rounding.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is antiscia in astrology?

Antiscia (singular: antiscion, also called solstice points) are ecliptic reflections of planets across the cardinal solstice axis at 0° Cancer and 0° Capricorn. A planet at 11°18' Scorpio has its antiscion at 18°42' Aquarius. Treat the antiscion like a hidden conjunction: when another body crosses it, it activates the original planet from a place the chart did not visibly mark.

How is antiscia different from contra-antiscia?

Antiscia reflect across the solstice axis (0° Cancer, 0° Capricorn). Contra-antiscia (counter-antiscia) reflect across the equinoctial axis (0° Aries, 0° Libra) and sit exactly opposite the antiscion. William Lilly framed antiscia signs as 'seeing signs' that act like trine or sextile, and contra-antiscia as 'hearing signs' that carry a command-and-obey hierarchy.

How do I calculate antiscia by hand?

Take the planet's exact degree and minute. Subtract the degrees from 30° and the minutes from 60', then place the result in the sign that pairs with the original across the solstice axis (Cancer/Gemini, Leo/Taurus, Virgo/Aries, Libra/Pisces, Scorpio/Aquarius, Sagittarius/Capricorn). Borrow when needed: 30°00' minus 11°18' becomes 29°60' minus 11°18', which equals 18°42'.

Which signs pair with which for antiscia?

For antiscia, signs that share the same daylight length pair up: Cancer with Gemini, Leo with Taurus, Virgo with Aries, Libra with Pisces, Scorpio with Aquarius, Sagittarius with Capricorn. For contra-antiscia, signs across the Aries-Libra axis pair: Aries with Pisces, Taurus with Aquarius, Gemini with Capricorn, Cancer with Sagittarius, Leo with Scorpio, Virgo with Libra.

What orb should I use for antiscia?

Traditional astrologers use a strict 1° orb for antiscia, which keeps the technique meaningful. For natal antiscia (one body's antiscion conjunct another natal body) and for synastry, the 1° cap is firm. For transits and progressions, use 2° applying and 1° separating. Wider orbs dilute the signal until it stops being a real connection.

Where do antiscia come from historically?

The technique appears in Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos (2nd century CE) and in Julius Firmicus Maternus's Mathesis (4th century CE). It was systematized by William Lilly in Christian Astrology (1647) and developed further by traditional astrologers like Bonatti and modern scholars like Deborah Houlding. Antiscia have been part of the Western astrological toolkit for nearly two thousand years.

Are antiscia the same as parallels of declination?

No. Antiscia reflect across ecliptic longitude (the position around the zodiac). Parallels of declination are equal-distance contacts across celestial declination (north or south of the celestial equator). Both are symmetry techniques and both can produce hidden contacts, but they are mathematically and practically different. Many readers confuse them; the distinction matters when you are checking a chart for activation.

How do I use antiscia in synastry?

Compare each person's natal antiscia to the other person's natal placements within a 1° orb. Hits indicate hidden ties that the visible chart comparison did not surface. Antiscia synastry is especially useful when two charts seem unaspected on the surface but the relationship still has unmistakable pull. Contra-antiscia hits often show a more hierarchical or fated dynamic.

Why does the calculator skip the asteroids and lots?

We surface antiscia for the seven traditional planets plus Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Chiron, and the lunar nodes. Asteroids and Hellenistic lots can technically be reflected too, but the signal weakens fast: most readers only act on antiscia of the major bodies. If you want lot-driven hidden chart points, the lot activation map covers that territory more directly.

Antiscia mark hidden chart points. Replay shows when they activate.

Antiscia describe where your chart hides itself. Transits across those points are when the chart actually lights up. Replay maps when your strongest placements peaked across your life and where the next peak is building.
