Diadem in Astrology
Diadem, the wreath of Berenice's Hair in Coma Berenices, carries Moon-Venus energy that bestows sacrifice for love, devotion that surrenders personal glory, and the beauty of selfless giving. It grants the native a capacity for love so complete that personal ambition is willingly subordinated to the welfare of the beloved.
Mythology & History
Diadem, also known as Alpha Comae Berenices, represents the brightest star in the constellation of Berenice's Hair. Queen Berenice II of Egypt vowed to sacrifice her famous golden hair to Aphrodite if her husband Ptolemy III returned safely from war. When he did, she cut her hair and placed it in the temple, but it disappeared overnight. The astronomer Conon of Samos diplomatically declared that Aphrodite had been so pleased she placed the hair among the stars. The Moon-Venus nature of Diadem reflects this story of feminine devotion, sacrifice, and celestial reward.
Coma Berenices Context
Diadem anchors the constellation Coma Berenices, Berenice's Hair, a scattering of faint stars that represents the queen's shorn golden tresses spread across the sky. The constellation is unusual in being one of the few named after a historical rather than mythological figure. Coma Berenices contains the north galactic pole and is rich with distant galaxy clusters. Diadem's Moon-Venus nature gives it a quality of gentle, sacrificial love: the willingness to give up personal beauty for a higher devotion.
