Exaltation

Concept

Exaltation is the second-highest essential dignity. When a planet is in its exaltation sign, it's like being an honored guest at a grand event: not at home, but treated like royalty and performing brilliantly. The Sun is exalted in Aries (vitality blazes with initiative), the Moon in Taurus (nurturing finds earthy stability), Venus in Pisces (love becomes boundless and transcendent). Exaltation brings out an idealized version of the planet's energy -- impressive and elevated, though sometimes slightly overdone, like a speaker who's a little too polished. It scores +4 in the dignity system. The scheme is one of the oldest in astrology, with roots in Babylonian tradition predating Ptolemy. Each exaltation has a specific degree: the Sun at 19 degrees Aries, the Moon at 3 degrees Taurus. The opposite sign is the planet's fall, where it feels diminished. Saturn exalted in Libra produces disciplined fairness; Saturn in fall in Aries struggles to impose structure on pure impulse.
