The Twelve Houses: Meaning and How to Use It
If planets are actors and signs are their costumes, houses are the rooms they perform in. The 1st house is self and body. The 7th is partnerships. The 10th is career and public reputation. Every planet in your chart sits in a house, and that house tells you where in your life that planet's themes play out most directly.

What the houses represent
Each house governs a domain of life. The 1st house is your body and how people perceive you. The 2nd is money and possessions. The 3rd handles siblings, neighbors, and short trips. The 4th is home and family roots. The 5th covers children, creativity, and pleasure. The 6th is work routines and health.
The 7th house is committed partnerships. The 8th deals with shared resources, debt, and the things people don't talk about at dinner. The 9th is higher education, travel, and belief systems. The 10th is career and public role. The 11th is friends and collective projects. The 12th is isolation, hidden matters, and self-undoing.
Angular, succedent, and cadent
The four angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10) are the most prominent. Planets here act with full force — they're visible, active, and hard to ignore. If Mars lands in your 10th house, your career tends to involve conflict, competition, or leadership whether you planned for it or not.
Succedent houses (2, 5, 8, 11) follow the angles and stabilize what the angles initiate. Cadent houses (3, 6, 9, 12) are the quietest. Planets here work behind the scenes. A cadent planet isn't weak — it just operates with less fanfare.
Whole-sign vs. quadrant house systems
In whole-sign houses, each house is an entire sign. If your Ascendant is in Leo, then Leo is the 1st house, Virgo is the 2nd, and so on. The math is simple and the houses never get distorted at extreme latitudes. This was the original Greek system and it's what most traditional astrologers use.
Quadrant systems (Placidus, Koch, Regiomontanus) divide the sky using time-based calculations. They produce unequal houses — some might span 40° while others barely cover 20°. Placidus is the default in most software. The choice of house system changes which house some planets fall in, which is why astrologers argue about it endlessly.
Planets in houses vs. empty houses
An empty house doesn't mean nothing happens in that area of life. It means no planet is emphasizing it. You still look at the sign on the house cusp and the planet that rules that sign. If your 7th house is empty but has Capricorn on the cusp, Saturn (Capricorn's ruler) describes your partnership style from wherever Saturn sits in the chart.
When multiple planets cluster in one house, that area gets loud. Three planets in the 3rd house might mean someone who writes constantly, talks too much, or has complicated sibling relationships — probably all three.
