Astrological Influence
Sagitta, the Arrow, is the third smallest constellation in the sky but one of the most ancient, recognized as a distinct pattern since at least the time of the Greeks. Despite its small size, its compact arrow shape is surprisingly easy to identify in the Milky Way between Vulpecula and Aquila. Astrologically, Sagitta carries themes of aim, intention, swift action, and the irreversibility of what has been set in motion.
The arrow is one of the oldest human tools, and as a constellation it represents the moment of commitment: the release that cannot be taken back, the decisive action that changes everything.
Spiritual & Symbolic Meaning
The Arrow represents focused intention made manifest. Once released, it cannot be recalled. Sagitta teaches that every thought, word, and action is an arrow loosed from the bow of consciousness, and spiritual maturity lies in choosing our targets with care. It also symbolizes the swiftness of divine communication: the message that travels faster than doubt can intercept it.
Mythology & Legend
Multiple myths claim Sagitta. In one tradition, it is the arrow with which Heracles (Hercules) shot the eagle (Aquila) that tormented Prometheus. In another, it is one of Cupid's arrows, or the arrow Apollo used to slay the Cyclopes in revenge for Zeus's killing of Asclepius. Eratosthenes wrote that Sagitta was the arrow that brought about the death of the healer, connecting it directly to the Ophiuchus myth cycle.
Sagitta was among the 48 constellations listed by Ptolemy in the 2nd century and was known to civilizations throughout the ancient Mediterranean and Near East.

Notable Stars
No fixed stars in Sagitta are part of the traditional astrological catalog. The astrological influence of this constellation operates through its overall nature rather than individual stars.
Observing Notes
Sagitta is small but distinctive, its four main stars forming a clear arrow shape in the Milky Way between Vulpecula and Aquila. Best viewed in late summer (August and September). It contains the globular cluster M71, visible in binoculars as a fuzzy patch, and the planetary nebula known as the Necklace Nebula (discovered in 2011). Its compact size makes it satisfying to identify even without optical aids.
