Astrological Influence

Mao, meaning 'the Constellation,' is the first mansion in the Chinese sieu system, corresponding to the Pleiades star cluster (eta Tauri). Ruled by the Sun, Mao serves as the starting point of the traditional Chinese ordering that once began at this brilliant asterism.

The name 'the Constellation' suggests that the Pleiades were considered the constellation par excellence, the archetypal star group against which all others were measured.

In the Chinese Sieu System

Mao belongs to the White Tiger palace, which governs the West and the season of Autumn. The White Tiger represents martial valor, metallic energy, and the harvesting phase of the annual cycle. As the first sieu in many traditional orderings, Mao holds a position of primacy within the Chinese system.

Lunar Influence

When the Moon passes through Mao, the solar rulership brings clarity and visibility to affairs. The Pleiades' historical association with agricultural timing and seasonal awareness makes this a period attuned to natural rhythms and the observation of celestial patterns.

Celestial Palace

White Tiger

The White Tiger (Bai Hu) is the celestial guardian of the West and the season of Autumn. Associated with the element Metal, the White Tiger represents courage, righteousness, and the harvesting energy that gathers what has ripened. In Chinese cosmology, the West is the direction of completion and return, where the Sun sets and the day's work is gathered in. The seven sieu of the White Tiger trace the great feline from its hind legs (Goel) through its body to its head, forming one of the four great celestial animals that divide the Chinese sky.
