White Moon Selena
The Karmic Counterpart to Lilith
White Moon Selena is not a physical body. It is a mathematical point, the lunar perigee, the closest approach of the Moon to Earth in its orbit. It is the counterpart to Black Moon Lilith (the lunar apogee) and in astrology it marks where karmic gifts, soul-level protection, and inherited grace land in your chart. This guide explains what Selena is, why different calculators give different positions, and what Selena in every sign and house has to tell you.

The geometry: why Selena is a point, not a planet
The Moon does not orbit Earth in a perfect circle. Its orbit is an ellipse, and the Moon reaches its closest approach to Earth at a point called the perigee. White Moon Selena is that point, read as a sign and house placement the way astrologers read Venus or Mars. Black Moon Lilith is the opposite end of the same orbit (the apogee, the farthest point). Same orbit, opposite ends.
There is nothing physically at Selena's location. You cannot see it in a telescope. What you can calculate is its ecliptic longitude at any moment in time, which is read as a zodiac sign and house placement. The calculation is precise; what you do with the position is interpretive.
Why different calculators show different Selena positions
There are four different things astrologers mean when they say Selena. Mean Selena is 180° opposite Mean Black Moon Lilith, the textbook value most sources cite. Sidereal Selena is Mean Selena shifted by the ayanamsa to measure against the fixed stars. True (Osculating) Selena is 180° opposite True Black Moon Lilith, the actual instantaneous perigee before smoothing. The h56 point is an older Astro.com value that the Swiss Ephemeris documentation itself describes as 'a hypothetical second Moon of obscure provenance' with 'no basis in reality' due to gravitational impossibility.
Most free calculators ship only one of these without telling you which. This guide explains all four so you can make an informed choice. The accompanying calculator computes Mean and Sidereal live, and the variant panel keeps True and h56 visible as 'Soon' so you can identify which Selena a source is using without guessing. We default to Mean while True Lilith is being computed; we will switch the default to True once the underlying Lilith variant ships, because the astrologer Leah Whitehorse's 2023 critique of h56 is correct and the authentic perigee reading is 180° opposite True Lilith.
What Selena means interpretively
The dominant reading comes from the Russian astrological tradition. Pavel Globa, the most widely cited Russian astrologer of the late twentieth century, introduced the White Moon Selena point in the 1980s as a karmic counterpart to Black Moon Lilith, drawing on the Avestan / Zoroastrian framework his school continues to teach. Selena represents accumulated good karma carried forward from past lives, the grace that makes certain life areas feel unfairly easy, and the protection the soul earns through the integrity of its prior conduct. The imagery is of an angelic counterpart to Lilith's exile: where Lilith marks the refusal that cost you something, Selena marks the generosity you were already given.
In a natal chart, Selena by sign and house marks where you receive without having to force anything. The sign describes the flavor of the gift: Selena in Leo shines through creative warmth; Selena in Pisces dissolves into compassion; Selena in Capricorn steadies the room. The house describes the life area where the grace shows up: 7th in partnership, 10th in career, 4th in the home. Selena rarely calls attention to itself, which is why most people live for decades without naming the places where things tend to work out without their having to try.
How to read Selena alongside Lilith
Selena and Lilith are the same orbit read from opposite ends. You cannot separate them. Whatever Lilith refused, Selena received. If your Lilith sits at 4° Scorpio in the 8th house (the refused hunger, the taboo, the 8th house territory of joint resources and intimate power), Selena sits at 4° Taurus in the 2nd house (the steady ground, the body, the personal possession). The work of the chart is learning which end to speak from and when.
Read Selena second. Lilith first. Lilith tells you where the no lives; Selena tells you where the already-given yes lives. A chart reader who skips the Selena side often misses the counterweight, which is usually the thing that makes the Lilith material survivable rather than consuming.
Selena in history: the Russian tradition and the modern critique
The point is a modern Russian construction. Pavel Globa introduced it in the 1980s within the Avestan / Zoroastrian-inflected school he founded; Sergey Vronsky's multi-volume Classical Astrology helped fix the karmic-credit reading in subsequent generations of Russian practice. The name Selena refers to the Greek moon goddess, but the astrological point itself is not Hellenistic; it is the lunar perigee paired with Lilith at the apogee to create a karmic polarity.
The tradition reached English-language astrology slowly, mostly through Astrodienst's additional-objects catalogue, where it appears as the code h56. Most Western astrologers adopted h56 without question. In September 2023, the British astrologer Leah Whitehorse published a critique demonstrating that h56 does not actually sit opposite Black Moon Lilith in the sky, undermining the archetypal polarity the tradition requires. The Swiss Ephemeris technical documentation already described h56 as 'a hypothetical second Moon of the Earth … of obscure provenance' with no astronomical basis. Whitehorse's recommendation, which we follow, is to compute Selena as the exact opposition to True Black Moon Lilith. We ship Mean and Sidereal today; True follows once True Lilith is implemented in the underlying service.

Sources & methodology
This guide makes specific historical and technical claims about a contested point. Here are the primary sources behind those claims and how the calculator that accompanies this hub computes Selena.
- Pavel Globa (b. 1953, Moscow), Russian astrologer and founder of the Avestan school
Introduced the White Moon Selena point in the 1980s as the karmic counterpart to Black Moon Lilith. Globa's primary written corpus is in Russian and is not available in a single canonical English-language edition; for an English secondary source confirming the 1980s dating used on this page, see Spofforth (Heaven's Moon), below.
- Sergey Vronsky (1915–1998), Classical Astrology (multi-volume; vol. 7, Planetology pt. IV, covers the Black Moon / White Moon / Lilith material) [link]
Latvian-Russian astrologer whose Classical Astrology series helped fix the karmic-credit reading of Selena across subsequent generations of Russian practice. Biographical entry maintained by the astrological community at Astrodatabank.
- Leah Whitehorse, "White Moon Selena and Calculation Quandaries," 29 September 2023 [link]
Documents that the commonly-catalogued h56 point does not actually sit opposite Black Moon Lilith in the sky, and recommends computing Selena as the exact opposition to True Black Moon Lilith instead. This page follows that recommendation.
- Swiss Ephemeris technical documentation, §2.7.6 ("White Moon Selena (h56)") [link]
Describes h56 as "a 'hypothetical' second Moon of the Earth (or a third one, after the 'Black Moon') of obscure provenance" and notes that "the physical existence of such a body is not possible" because the gravities of the Sun, Earth, and Moon would dominate any such orbit. Our calculator therefore does not ship h56 as an active variant.
- Astrodienst, "Extra chart factors" (FAQ page listing additional asteroids and hypothetical points) [link]
Reference page where Astro.com publishes the codes for hypothetical points used in extended chart selection: h13 for True Black Moon Lilith, h56 for the contested Selena. Many free Selena calculators on the open web read h56 from this catalogue without verifying that it actually opposes Lilith.
- David T Spofforth, "The Origins of White Moon Selena," Heaven's Moon (heavensmoon.co.uk) [link]
Secondary source consulted for the 1980s dating of Globa's introduction of Selena. States that the point "has its origins in Russian Astrology, first put forward in the 1980s by Russia's most famous astrologer, Pavel Globa." Used to correct an earlier draft of this hub that gave a vaguer mid-twentieth-century date.
Calculation methodology
The accompanying calculator computes Mean Selena (180° opposite Mean Black Moon Lilith) and Sidereal Selena (Mean shifted by the ayanamsa) live from the user's birth data. True Selena is shown as 'Soon' in the variant panel and will become the default once True Black Moon Lilith is computed in the underlying ephemeris service. The h56 point is documented above for reference only and is not offered as a variant, on the grounds noted in the Swiss Ephemeris docs and in Whitehorse 2023.
