Lunar Nodes
North Node in Astrology
Signs, South Node Axis, True Node, and Symbols
The North Node and South Node are one axis in the birth chart. The North Node points toward growth, stretch, and unfamiliar development. The South Node names the familiar pattern, the sign and house where old habits can become too easy.

The nodes are calculated points, not planets. The sign axis is a broad interpretive frame. The house, degree, ruler, and any true-versus-mean difference need a full birth chart calculation.
North Node and South Node, the axis
You do not read the North Node alone. Every North Node sign carries the opposite South Node sign with it: Cancer with Capricorn, Leo with Aquarius, Virgo with Pisces, and so on. The North Node describes what needs practice. The South Node describes what already feels known.
This is why one axis page can answer both sides of the search. A North Node in Taurus page is also the South Node in Scorpio page, because those placements are always paired in the same chart. For the releasing end of the axis on its own terms, read the South Node in astrology hub.
True Node astrology vs mean node
The true node is the node's calculated position at the birth moment, including its small forward and backward wobble. The mean node smooths that wobble into an average position. Most of the time they are close enough to tell the same story.
They become important when the node is close to a sign boundary. In that case the true node and mean node can name different signs. The North Node calculator shows both so you can see the difference directly.
North Node symbol and South Node symbol
The North Node symbol is ☊, traditionally called the dragon's head. The South Node symbol is ☋, the dragon's tail. Those names come from older eclipse language, because eclipses happen when a New or Full Moon falls near the lunar nodes.
In a chart wheel, the symbols sit exactly opposite each other. The glyphs are a reminder that the node reading is always a pair: what increases and what releases, what stretches forward and what has already been rehearsed.

How houses and rulers personalize the node
The sign gives the style of the growth. The house shows where in life it becomes personal: relationship, family, vocation, study, money, health, or another chart area. Houses need an accurate birth time because they depend on the Ascendant.
The ruler of the North Node sign matters too. A Cancer North Node is ruled by the Moon, while a Virgo North Node is ruled by Mercury. Reading that ruler's sign and house shows how the nodal path connects to the rest of the birth chart.
North Node FAQ
What is the North Node in astrology?
The North Node is the ascending lunar node, one of the two places where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. In a birth chart it marks a growth direction, while the South Node describes familiar habits and inherited ease.
How do I find my South Node sign?
Your South Node is always exactly opposite your North Node. If your North Node is in Cancer, your South Node is in Capricorn. A calculator can also show the degree and house, which require birth data.
What is the North Node symbol?
The North Node symbol is the dragon's head, shown as an upright horseshoe shape. The South Node symbol is the same shape inverted, called the dragon's tail.
Should I use true node or mean node astrology?
Both are valid frames. The true node tracks the node's exact oscillating position at birth, while the mean node smooths that motion into an average. The difference usually matters only near a sign boundary.
